HVAC 101: What Every New Homeowner in North Carolina Should Know About Their System
Buying a home in North Carolina is a big milestone! While you're unpacking boxes and getting settled in, don’t forget to learn about one of the most important systems in your home: your HVAC. In our climate, where summers can be hot and humid and winters can be chilly, a well-maintained HVAC system is essential for year-round comfort and energy savings.
At Target Temp Heating and Cooling, we work with homeowners across the Triangle, and we’ve found that a little HVAC knowledge goes a long way. Here’s what every new homeowner should know:
1. Know What Type of System You Have
Your home may have a traditional split system with a furnace and central AC, a heat pump (common in the South), or even a ductless mini-split. Take a few minutes to locate your thermostat, indoor unit, outdoor condenser, and air returns. Knowing your system type helps you communicate better with your HVAC technician and understand how it operates seasonally.
2. Replace the Air Filter (and Keep Replacing It!)
This small task makes a huge impact. Dirty filters restrict airflow, force your system to work harder, and can lead to poor indoor air quality. If you’re unsure when the filter was last changed, go ahead and swap it out. We recommend checking your filter monthly and replacing it at least every 1–3 months, especially in North Carolina’s pollen-heavy spring months.
3. Schedule a Professional Inspection
Even if everything seems to be working, scheduling a system inspection with a licensed local HVAC company (like us!) is a smart move. We’ll make sure your equipment is running efficiently, safely, and up to code. A seasonal tune-up can also help prevent surprise breakdowns in the middle of summer or winter.
4. Learn Your Thermostat
If your new home came with a programmable or smart thermostat, take the time to learn how it works. Creating a custom schedule can reduce energy use without sacrificing comfort. Plus, many smart thermostats qualify for energy rebates through Duke Energy or local utility providers.
5. Check the System Age and Warranty
Find out how old your HVAC system is. Most units last 10–15 years with proper care. Ask the previous homeowners or check the model and serial numbers (often found on the outdoor unit) to determine the manufacture date. Knowing your system’s age helps you plan for future replacements and budgeting.
6. Inspect the Ductwork and Vents
Ductwork plays a major role in your system’s performance. If you notice rooms that are hotter or colder than others, unusual smells, or lots of dust, your ducts could be leaking or in need of cleaning. Properly sealed and insulated ductwork keeps your home comfortable and your energy bills low.
